What’s the difference between acrylic, olefin and polyester canopies?

At Belveo, we offer three different canopy materials for your parasol. While all provide maximum sun protection (UPF 50+), the choice depends on your specific needs:
- Fabric thickness (and therefore durability)
- Colour fastness over time
- Aesthetic finish (look and feel)
-Water repellency (resistance to the British weather)

ACRYLIC CANOPY: The Belveo Signature

Our Acrylic canopy is 270g/m² thick—our densest and most resilient fabric. It stands out for its premium finish: a rich texture and vibrant colours (solution-dyed fibres) that remain stable for years (7-year warranty). Highly water-repellent, it can withstand normal rain for extended periods and heavy downpours or storms for several hours. This is the canopy we recommend for those seeking ultimate long-term stability.

Is this for you?
- Homeowners:
If your outdoor space is exposed to the elements and you want peace of mind with the longest possible lifespan, Acrylic is the best choice.
-Professionals: (Hotels, architects, restaurants, etc.) If you are equipping a public space, Acrylic is the industry standard for durability and style.

Pros:
- Superior look and feel
- 7-year colour warranty
- Excellent water repellency (withstands heavy rain)
- Fabric is 40% thicker than other materials

Cons:
- Available in 3 exclusive colours only (Anthracite Grey, Taupe, Ivory)

OLEFIN CANOPY: The perfect balance

Our Olefin canopy is 50% recycled and 190g/m² thick. It offers a significant aesthetic upgrade with its matte finish and silky touch, enhancing any garden or patio. The fabric is solution-dyed to ensure excellent colour fastness over time (5-year warranty). Water-repellent and quick-drying, it easily handles light showers or poolside splashes.

Is this for you? If you are looking for a beautiful, refined parasol that maintains its colour and appearance for many seasons, Olefin is an excellent choice.

Pros:
- Refined matte appearance and soft touch
- 5-year colour warranty

Cons:
- Standard water repellency (best for light rain)
- Lighter fabric weight

POLYESTER CANOPY: Essential Protection

Our Polyester canopy is 100% recycled and 210g/m² thick. It provides the essentials: effective and immediate sun protection. It is a functional and accessible choice for those looking for simple shade. With its high-shine finish, it is treated to resist fading, though some fading may occur within a few months under intensive use.

Is this for you? If you need a purely functional, entry-level parasol to enjoy the shade at an accessible price point.

Pros:
- Price/Value for money

Cons:
- Subject to colour fading over time
- Standard water repellency (not suitable for heavy rain)
- Standard fabric density

What is the wind resistance of Belveo parasols?

Belveo parasols are designed to withstand strong winds thanks to robust materials and our patented innovation. Our parasols undergo strict quality control during manufacturing, in line with ISO 2859 standards, ensuring impeccable quality. We prioritise real-world testing, as it better replicates the challenges posed by nature compared to traditional wind tunnels. In our tests, they withstood winds of up to 90km/h in an upright position under real-world conditions. However, it's important to note that the nature of the wind influences its resistance: a continuous 50km/h wind can sometimes be more destabilising than a 90km/h gust.

To ensure your safety and protect your parasol, please follow these recommendations:

  • Ensure sufficient weighting (base slabs or ground anchoring).
  • Close the parasol if the base becomes unstable or if the canopy remains lifted.
  • Do not use the parasol in winds exceeding 60km/h when open, or 80km/h when closed.

By following these guidelines, you can enjoy your parasol with complete peace of mind.

Is the ballast included? What type of ballast do I need?

All cantilever parasols are delivered with a cross base. Please note: the ballast is not included with our parasols, but it is essential for stability. We offer several solutions to suit your needs:

  • Fillable Base Slabs: Our slabs (50x50cm) are designed to be filled with water or sand. Note that sand provides more weight per volume compared to water. For a cantilever parasol, a ballast of 100kg (4 slabs of at least 25kg each) is recommended, or 120kg for a 3x4m model, using sand. Please note that once wet, sand cannot be removed from the slabs. Plan for a ballast covering a floor area of 1m².

  • Wheeled Base: If you're looking for a mobile solution, our wheeled base for cantilever parasols is ideal. Weighted with water and/or sand, it guarantees optimal stability while making it easier to move your parasol.

For safe and long-lasting use, always ensure you follow our ballast recommendations based on the model and your space configuration. Our recommendations are outlined in the technical specifications for each parasol. Feel free to contact us for personalised advice.

Are the canopies interchangeable?

Yes, the canopies of our parasols are interchangeable, and replacing them is very simple. Here’s how:

1. Open the zips located on each fibreglass rib and gently bend them to remove the canopy.

2. Unscrew the top cap at the top of the parasol. This will allow you to slide the canopy off from above.

3. Install the new canopy by reversing the steps: place it over the ribs, close the zips, then screw the top cap back on to secure everything.

In just a few simple steps, your parasol will look as good as new or can be adapted to suit your preferences. Our interchangeable canopies are designed for flexibility and durability while remaining easy to handle.
