How to store your parasol during winter
Your garden parasol is an essential part of your outside space, offering much-needed shade during the warmer months. But as winter approaches, it’s important that your parasol is stored in the correct way so that it not only lasts longer, but is also hassle free when it comes to getting it back out again.
In this guide, we’ll take you through the best practices for storing your parasol and ensuring it’s easy to get ready again when the sunshine returns.
Why proper storage matters
Leaving your parasol outside throughout winter might seem like an easy option, but exposure to cold, damp, and harsh climate conditions will leave it vulnerable to inevitable damage. This can include; moisture build-up which can cause mould or mildew on the fabric, or strong winds and drastic temperature changes like frost can weaken the frame. A well-maintained parasol will last longer and also retain its colour.
Step 1: Clean before storing
Before putting your parasol away for the season, it’s important to clean it thoroughly. Dirt, dust, and debris can build up over time, and if left unchecked, they can lead to stains and material deterioration.
-
Warm soapy water – A mixture of mild soap and warm water is perfect for cleaning your umbrella fabric. Gently scrub with a soft brush or cloth to remove any marks or stains.
-
Rinse – Rinse off any soap residue and allow the material to dry completely before packing up. Leaving your parasol to remain damp can lead to mould and mildew.
-
Wipe the base and frame – Don’t forget about the base and pole. Wipe them down with a damp cloth to remove any debris.
*Bonus tip; for stubborn stains, using a gentle fabric cleaner can help lift any marks without damaging the material.
Step 2: Choose the ideal location
Finding the right place to store your parasol is key to keeping it in top condition. Having the appropriate place to store large outdoor items is a luxury we don’t all have, but here are a few things to consider:
-
Dry and sheltered – A garage, shed, or sheltered area is the ideal source of protection from rain and frost.
-
Avoid extreme temperatures – While they are designed for external use, extreme cold can leave some materials brittle over time.
-
Keep it elevated – If you are keeping it in a shed or garage, try to keep it off the ground to avoid potential liquid damage.
If you don’t have a suitable indoor space, consider using a water resistant cover for extra protection. Our parasol covers are specifically designed to shield it from moisture and dust while allowing air circulation to prevent condensation.
Step 3: Use a protective cover
As previously mentioned, a high-quality cover is one of the best ways to keep it in excellent condition during the colder months. Our durable protective covers are designed to keep your parasol safe from the elements, but also have a rigid rod which allows you to put on and remove easily, without having to climb a stepladder to reach the top.
When choosing a cover, look for one that:
-
Fit – Ensuring it fits well will guarantee full protection without leaving gaps where dust and moisture can get in.
-
Waterproof material – A water-resistant material will prevent rain from seeping through.
-
Ventilation – Breathable textile or built-in air vents aids the prevention of condensation and mould.
It’s not just the temperature and bad weather your parasol needs protecting from, rays from the sun and the moon also put it at risk of discoloration. That is why we always recommend using a cover as not only do they protect the umbrella and frame but also make it easier to set up again in the spring.
Step 4: Proper storage
Once cleansed and shielded, it’s time to pack safely away:
-
Dismantle – If you have a cantilever parasol or centre pole parasol and it can be taken apart, store the frame and canopy separately to reduce pressure on any components.
-
Secure upright or flat – If being kept upright, make sure the base is stable. If lying flat, place it on a raised surface to avoid direct contact with a damp floor. Our wheeled Kona base can be moved with ease and secured just as easily.
-
Check for pests – Before packing it up, ensure there are no insects or spiders hiding in the folds or joints.
Our range of parasol’s are designed to last, that’s why they can be dismantled and stored with ease. We don’t want our parasols to end up in the bin after a few seasons, so alongside the 2 year warranty, you can also purchase all of the spare parts you need and we will guide you through the repair process.
Ensuring your parasol is ready for spring
When winter is over, getting ready again is simple:
-
Uncover and inspect – Remove the protective cover and check for any dust, debris, or signs of wear.
-
Clean the parasol – A quick wipe-down with warm soapy water will freshen it up.
-
Reassemble and enjoy – Once everything has been scrubbed and dried out, reattach any components, secure the base, and enjoy your garden again.
